Singapore's beloved Indonesian-Peranakan kueh and cake shop, a heritage dessert institution.
Bengawan Solo is one of Singapore's most treasured traditional cake and kueh shops, founded in 1979 by Tjendriariasukawati and named after the classic Indonesian song. The brand has become synonymous with Indonesian-Peranakan sweets, offering an extensive range of kueh that represents the rich culinary heritage of the region.
Signature items include the delicate kueh lapis (layer cake), ondeh-ondeh with their burst of liquid gula melaka, kueh dadar (pandan crepes with grated coconut), and the ever-popular pineapple tarts that fly off shelves during festive seasons.
Beyond kueh, Bengawan Solo also produces whole cakes, butter cakes, and cookies, all made using traditional recipes and techniques that have been maintained over decades. The brand operates numerous outlets across Singapore, and each maintains the same commitment to quality that has kept generations of customers returning. Bengawan Solo occupies a special place in Singapore's food culture — it is the shop many turn to for festive gifting, family celebrations, or simply an everyday treat that connects them to the flavours of home.

I used to pick up cakes when I lived in Bukit Batok, today I went there to pick up Kaya cake. Guests said,it tastes so good. I do not take eggs so I did not try it.
I like to eat Lapis Sagu a lot. I picked up a few packets of mixed Kueh many times. It is good. Staff members were alert and attentive. I will visit that branch again. Thank you 😊❤

I believe this is probably the last few branches that sell their amazing chendol. Intense flavour of coconut sugar that binds the fat kidney beans and soft silky jellies and topped with fresh coconut milk. Perfect dessert!

Kueh(s) here are always so consistent. Randomly picked a few but all taste good. But if I had to pick my favs they would be the soon kueh, talam ubi, tapioca, Pandan cake, corn kueh, ondeh ondeh.

Several months ago I walked past and saw nasi lemak displayed at this outlet. Whilst their desserts are undoubtedly good, I wasn't quite sure about trying their nasi lemak though. But something about the retro looking banana leaf wrapped bundle appealed to me. So after several walk-by and trying to ignore it later, I decided what the heck and forked out $2.50 for one. As I opened it up, more nostalgia is evoked as it looked similar to the nasi lemak I had as a kid. But back then we only used to have one kuning fish, not two. So this 2024 version is double the decadence. There's also ikan bilis and of course chili. But disappointingly no eggs. And it's also halal. By the way Bengawan Solo doesn't make them. It's made by another company so Bengawan Solo merely sells them. If you're from my generation, you'll probably recognize the taste right away. This is how nasi lemak used to be, before it evolved and became the fancy version that you find today. But sometimes I crave the old version, the same way that sometimes I wish life was back to the bygone good old times. Anyway, this nasi lemak gets a 3.5/5. Half point deducted for omitting the eggs.

The only Bangawan that serve chendol, that's what the stuff told me. The chendol is good. Very traditional just kidney beans and green chendol. You can taste the pandan flavour in from the green chendol. Good stuff.
