Visiting Lao Huo Tang at Star Vista was a mix of highs and lows. Renowned for its long-boiled Chinese soups and a selection of ala carte zi char dishes, the restaurant had a lot to offer. However, the waiting time was rather lengthy, largely due to the high volume of food delivery orders. We started with the apple soup, which was delightful. The balance of fruity sweetness and the savory pork rib soup base created a hearty and satisfying dish. It paired wonderfully with the yam rice, making for a comforting start to the meal. From the ala carte menu, we tried the fried Kang Kong. Unfortunately, this dish was a letdown. It lacked the rich, spicy sambal and belachan flavor that typically characterizes this dish, leaving us somewhat disappointed. On a brighter note, the deep-fried cod fish in soy sauce was quite good. The fish was well-cooked, and the soy sauce complemented it nicely, adding a savory depth to the dish. Overall, while some dishes did not live up to expectations, the apple soup was the highlight for me. Lao Huo Tang offers a comforting selection of soups and a few notable dishes, but there is room for improvement in the execution of some other items.

Hi LHT -- Loveeee your soups, as always. Huge fan. A small feedback- the lids of your takeaway plastic containers are too loose (fell right off when I touched them). There's a lot of spillage/leakage for takeout (not grab brother's fault) n also the plastic is too soft for hot soup as the container was totally warped out of shape. Just a little feedback. Soup's good!

Rated this for the overall dining experience - a cozy spot for Chinese cuisine at reasonable prices. Would definitely come again when craving comfort and a quiet dining environment. We ordered the National Day set, and I’d say it was worth the bucks. The additional dishes we tried were all lightly warm, which made me guess they were prepared earlier and kept in the bain-marie. Personally, I prefer my food served hot, especially at a Chinese restaurant. The only dish that arrived piping hot was the salted egg lotus root. Overall, the flavours were average and comforting. Now, onto the most important part - the soup! I was pleasantly surprised to know they offer a one-time refill, which is such a thoughtful gesture for a soup lover like me. But a little heads-up to all soup people out there: this isn’t your typical hawker or home-style soup. It’s boiled for a long time, so it’s thicker and less smooth on the throat. The soups we had were quite meaty and hearty, not exactly light or refreshing, but perfect if you’re looking for something warm and filling! Oh, and one more thing! The pumpkin rice totally surprised me! I don’t even like pumpkin, but the rice was so flavourful and full of dried shrimp aroma. Dried shrimp lovers, please order this! I finished the whole bowl without even realising it.
